Big E offers to officiate weddings in Los Angeles
In addition to being one of the longest-reigning tag team champions in WWE history, Big E has added a few other titles to his resume in 2017: WrestleMania host, purveyor of New Day Pops, SmackDown LIVE Superstar. But the latest one is completely out of left field, even for the charismatic powerhouse: wedding officiant.
Big E put out a call on Twitter Wednesday night, looking for any lovebirds who want The Power of Positivity injected into their nuptials.
I may be officiating weddings in LA April 20-22. Hit me if you're weird. MarriedbyBigE@gmail.com. I'm actually not joking. For once.— ShinigamE (@WWEBigE) April 12, 2017
Much to the big man’s surprise (and the disappointment of a just-married Renee Young), there are plenty of people who want the minister presiding over their wedding to be ready with a celebratory hip swivel at any given moment.
WWE.com caught up with Big E to get the story behind his sudden interest in matrimony.
WWE.COM: So, what led to you offering yourself up as a wedding officiant?
BIG E: I recently learned that I would have a lot of time off. I really don’t do well with a lot of idle time. A couple of weeks ago, we just had WrestleMania, which kept me really busy. Then, we had about six days off, which was fitting, and then TV.
I’m ready to work. I don’t do well with idle time. My head was spinning, thinking “What am I going to do with all these days off?” I don’t really want to take a vacation. I’m bored just being in the house. I think I was talking about it in the locker room, [and] I actually have to give all credit to Enzo Amore. He came up with this idea. As soon as I heard it, I thought “This is kind of ridiculous, but kind of phenomenal, as well.” So, I gave it some thought, ran it by a couple of my friends, got their feedback. I couldn’t really think of a reason not to do it and got even more excited about the prospect.
WWE.COM: What excites you the most about this?
BIG E: It’s one of those things that’s absurd and random, but also delightful and heartwarming in its own way. Why not? I just booked my flight to LA; I’ll be there for a week. The cool thing is I’ll get to see some friends, do some things I’ve been meaning to do for a while. Then, I’ll also get to, hopefully, marry a few couples.
WWE.COM: Are you an ordained minister?
BIG E: I just got ordained online. It’s a surprisingly easy process. You just put some information in and they send you a certificate. That’s that. It’s official. We made sure of that.
WWE.COM: After you put the call out on Twitter, what has the response been like?
BIG E: The response has been good. I’ve been getting some other things in order, so I set up the email with a good buddy of mine, Emilio Sparks. He and I are working on it together. He sent me some of the better responses. We’re going to comb through some emails and try to figure out timing, scheduling and making sure that it’s a good fit for all involved.
WWE.COM: What do you think makes you a good fit for this?
BIG E: I guess I’m hoping that people are excited to have me. I don’t want to walk into an awkward situation where just the husband or just the wife wants me there. I want it to be something where everyone involved is pleased with the outcome.
But anything specific? I could give you something sappy about people who are madly in love and want to be together forever, but it’s cool to be part of someone’s day. I had no idea how much interest there would actually be; I just threw it out there. I told Emilio that I wouldn’t be surprised if there were no serious requests, but there are a few. Now, we have to sit down and reply to people. I’ll probably find a way to call, Skype or FaceTime them so people know it’s real.
WWE.COM: Do you think people might not be taking you seriously on this?
BIG E: A lot of what I tweet is nonsense. People have a right to believe I’m the boy who cried wolf. But, hopefully, we’ll have the opportunity to show people that I really want to do this and make it work.
WWE.COM: What can the potential happy couples expect from a Big E wedding?
BIG E: It’s pretty fluid, I think. That’s one of the things we’re going to negotiate. I’m imagining people kind of want to see me as a character and do some of the things that I do on TV. I’m not going to approach it as a normal minister would. My job is an entertainer, so my thought is people want to see me entertain.
That’s something we can talk about, of course. If you have a grandmother at your wedding who is uncomfortable with me shaking my hips, that’s something that I can tone down. It’s a case-by-case basis. I’m sure people who would try to employ my services would want something fun, but we’ll talk about it.
WWE.COM: If this works out, would you consider expanding your ministry? Maybe baptisms and the like?
BIG E: I don’t know about that. I think a lot of the more deeply religious stuff, I might leave to more practiced professionals. But we have talked about expanding into parties and quinceañeras as The New Day. We’ve joked about it, but I think it would be a lot of fun to randomly pop up at a bar mitzvah and just hang out, have some fun and enjoy the company. We’ll see.
Woods and Kofi aren’t involved in this because they’ve got a lot going on in their lives. Both have families, Woods has a child on the way. This is one of those things that I decided to do on a whim. I have no idea what’s going to happen beyond next weekend. It might be a one and done. But if it goes smoothly and people are happy and request more things, I’ll pursue it. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens.
